Archie’s Weird Mysteries(Oct 2, 1999 – Feb 21, 2000)
Director:
Supernatural, Fantasy,
Key Words: Children’s,
Licensed American Publisher: DIC Entertainment, Le Studios Tex
Episodes: 40
In the town of Riverdale, a physics lab experiment in the high school turns the town into a magnet for B-movie style monsters. Archie is a reporter for the school newspaper and he and the gang try to find out what is really going on and try to find a way to end this Weird Mysteries.
My Thoughts: Well, this is a bit odd show. They tried to make small comic book into a strange supernatural mystery show and yet, it fits a bit well. I wish the first episode would have just talked about how the whole Riverdale thing happened instead of a show about watching too much TV. Actually, if you think about it, that’s not really the best idea for them to use and might have been the reason that there was only 40 episodes. People took the first episode as a sign to stop watching when it came on. They tried to put educational information for children in every show and it got annoying at that part.
We have the normal personalities for the characters, and they try to give those ones that are much deeper then the comic, only falling short a couple times. They are still all pretty much stereotypical. Betty is a perfect woman, Jughead eats all the time and normally is lazy, Veronica is a little spoiled brat, Reggie is the jock, and Archie is the odd weakling who is pretty much almost the perfect 60s boy that all the girls like. The only one that is I guess new is Dilton, a nerdy genius who is the reason strange things happen.
Animation is just so off sometimes, things loop and a couple things just don’t flow well along with the problem with inconsistencies in the art. Some shows have more then others and this one is no exception though they do keep the feeling of the real comics in it. Everything is still in the 60s, same values in bright colors, same design for characters, and all together just feels like a moving comic.
Not so happy about the opening, making the show sound like it’s a rip off of some sort of animated superhero show. The voices actually fit really nicely though. Some characters sound nerdy enough and others feel bitchy enough. It did get old to keep hearing Veronica and Betty fight over Archie all the time too.
