There's nothing wrong with Batman Forever and no, you're not going to make me love the Adam West Batman series, so there's half your video right there. But I do agree that Arnie's performance was easily the highlight of the movie, ice puns and all. And not in a "so bad it's good" kind of way, I thought his Mr. Freeze was genuinely entertaining. That man had so much fun with the role it's hard to not go along. I felt the same way about Two-Face and the Riddler - two talented actors giving it their all and creating memorable characters. What tanks Batman and Robin first and foremost is Uma Thurman delivering by far the WORST performance she has ever delivered, and damn near the worst performance I've ever seen. That woman stinks up the movie every time she's on-screen. Her character is aimless and pointless, her delivery is horrible and the Mexican Lucha Libre wrestler following her around that I learned only 10 years after I'd seen the movie was supposed to be Bane are just intollerable. Batman is bland, Robin is whiny, Batgirl is pointless and the whole movie's script is just a colossal void of anything interesting. Here's the thing - Batman and Robin WAS NOT a comedy, nor was it a parody. If it was intended to be an homage to the "good old days," it should have picked better material to refer to than the breaking the fourth wall nonsense of Batman and Robin showing up at an auction and brandishing a Bat Credit Card. To me, this isn't a "BAT! CREDIT! CAAARD!" moment, it was just a head-shaking "What was the director thinking?" moment because it simply ENDS any kind of suspension of disbelief the movie might have had. It stops being a movie and turns into a particularly bad Saturday Night Live skit that just went on an hour and a half too long. Batman and Robin is sunk by a weak as all hell script that's meandering and ultimately aimless, really despicable performance from the entire cast save Arnie and a resounding lack of anything in the movie to actually like. It lacks any interesting visuals, it lacks any interesting characters, it lacks any decent action scenes and it lacks any ideas that I hadn't seen before. For as much as you claim it was a bad movie, Batman Forever managed to eat its cake and have it too - it created a Batman who was at once serious and still outlandish, and it made the movie interesting. I liked the brain-reading machines. Batman and Robin, by contrast, simply has nothing to engage with, yet nearly the entire character roster is so annoying as to be insufferable. There's no defending that. Sure, that doesn't make Joel Schumacher a horrible person. He's directed other, much better movies. But aside from Mr. Freeze, I literally cannot come up with a reason why I'd want to watch this movie again. There's simply nothing to watch it for.

I can't speak with the same level of expertise on batman as others here, but I will say that I've noticed a pattern to the various forms of fan outrage i've seen since I started looking at these things back in '98. Most of the time its all about the perception of what ___ is "supposed to be" (usually accompanied by excessive amounts of emotional language). Personally, I think the best work is done when there's little acknowledgement on what you're supposed to do or not do. Also, I want the "realism" argument to die in a fire since I think believeability is more important than realism. that aside, great video. While I've never been part of the crowd that got up in arms over the films (or similar cases of fan outrage), this does give a different sort of light to look at the film. ~The Monk

This style works purdy well, and you covered two movies for the price of one, which is also great. I wonder what the reaction from fanboys will be though, maybe there's really not that many people hating on the film anymore. Personally, I enjoy the hell out of most of Batman & Robin, the bat credit card, Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, it's all too amusing not to laugh at it. I do get bored at the final act though, because it moves sooo slow, and the final scene with freeze IS pretty stupid. But again, if the movie turns up while I'm channel surfing on TV, I'll let it play, coz I love watching it XD

I know what you mean. I loved Grant Morrison's Batman & Robin series for that very reason, because Dick Grayson makes for a far more even tempered Batman who actually cracks a smile now and then. I liked Batman Forever and Batman & Robin as a kid too, and still do to a degree. If nothing else, they're both gorgeous to look at (a handful of ugly costumes notwithstanding ) and enjoyable for their goofiness.

I have to say it's annoying when batman has to be dark and gritty because then he's ends up being an asshole. I'm in a way turned of to Batman because everyone wants to make him so dark. I liked that movie as a child. I mean did it get it was sort of over the top in some places. I didn't think it was totally bad till you know who got a hold of it. I'd still think I'd watch it because the set design is very interesting.
