I happen to like this movie more than Conqueror of Shamballa! This movie did reuse things from Brotherhood, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it. It seems that you are looking too deep into this and are trying to find some kind of meaning behind the story of this movie!

This is just another 1 of those "Leave your brain at the door" kind of things and enjoy it for what it is type of films!

True, which is why I said I liked this movie, and thought that it was overall entertaining. However, you can't excuse lazy writing. They had a chance to make something daring and original, and even went so far as to advertise it as such. In the end, the movie just didn't deliver for me.

I'm sorry. The ending of the original anime was "one of the best anime-only endings of all time?" Wouldn't that require that the ending were good in the first place? Because I have rarely found myself facepalming more at an anime ending pretty much ever. I hated this ending so much that I've been using the term "anime ending" to describe conclusions to stories that make no sense and are completely unsatisfying. I never got around to watching Brotherhood, but it having a different ending from the original anime is reason enough to put in the time.

Most of the above is in reference to the original Fullmetal Alchemist series that feels like it completely fell apart towards the point of the secret military bunker.
